Top Italian clubs should promote football in Asia, says Cannavaro

SINGAPORE: Football legend Fabio Cannavaro said top Italian football clubs should travel more to Asia to promote their brand of football to this part of the world.

Cannavaro, who is on a four-day visit to Singapore, is promoting his current club Al Ahli Dubai.

On Thursday, 39-year-old Cannavaro joined some underprivileged kids from Central Singapore Community Development Council for a tour of Resorts World Sentosa.

The Italian is best known for being the Captain of the 2006 World Cup winning team.

Cannavaro, who has played in several big Italian clubs including Spanish giants Real Madrid, feels that more can be done to promote Italian football in Asia, where English football is more predominant.

"In Italy, they would have to start investing in the structure in new stadiums. On the contrary, in England they have done that. Secondly, they need to invest in young players, in the youth systems. Thirdly, it's important for the Italian top teams to travel more to Asia and to the Middle East to increase their popularity," he said.

Retiring from international football in 2010, the Italian is currently plying his trade in the Middle East.

The Naples native thinks the 2022 World Cup hosting rights should not be taken away from Qatar despite the controversy surrounding the bid.

As for his trip to Singapore, a busy itinerary awaits the centre back, including a coaching clinic with the Young Lions and various appearances to meet his fans.

Cannavaro will also be meeting 10 young athletes from five different sports this Saturday. At the breakfast session, the football legend will share his experience and give advice to young athletes on how to get to the top.
